Social Justice & Art Therapy in Our Community

The Colorado Art Therapy Association was established to represent the integrity and voices of Colorado’s art therapists and to serve the community at-large through art therapy. We are committed to social justice and we wish to build strong bridges with our community members and organizations with a promise to uplift ALL voices. Through social justice and community-driven work, we grow the field of art therapy in Colorado.

Our mission statement encompasses a universal language to embrace ALL people through: engagement, education, and uniting with art therapy. As members of the association and the Colorado community, we use creativity to promote and facilitate social change. 

We believe in social justice and we focus on social action as it aligns with our ethical codes. The foundation of doing art therapy is beneficence and non-maleficence; to take action in the benefit of ALL clients and to abide by the principle of not doing harm.

Having a commitment to inclusivity, integrating advocacy, promoting awareness, and upholding social justice for our communities are essential values to practicing art therapy in Colorado. 

Collaborating and connecting together is the power of the Colorado Art Therapy Association. We wish to work together to represent and be the threshold in ways that strengthen and unite the Colorado community.

We strive to utilize art therapy to promote healing as well as social change and we recognize that we cannot pursue change without the strength of our united community.

Social Justice in Action

Now, it is time to maintain a social justice perspective in all of the work we do.  We will not tolerate discrimination.

The Colorado Art Therapy Association aims to:

  • Honor all cultural, religious and faith holidays

  • Aim to reduce white-washed wellness in art therapy history

  • Promote the teachings, work, and guidance of art therapists of color

  • Take accountability for any harm perpetuated to others and create change

  • Work with the Colorado community to uphold social justice awareness

  • Promote the work of local art therapists of color in Colorado

  • Collaborate with local non-profit organizations that support marginalized communities to provide multifaceted, art thearpy-based programs to the public
